Overview

This project explores the design of interactive collaborative workspaces that combine digital tabletop displays with large vertical displays in a seamless manner. We envision such workspaces providing users with a fluid means of presenting and making sense of information such as digital media. In particular, we are exploring how the tabletop display can be used to manipulate and collaborate around content while the 'large vertical can be used for presentation and sharing.

Prototype Designs

Our design approach is to brainstorm and work through paper designs before rapidly prototyping the ideas. We recently finished the design and implementation of two design ideas that link tabletop displays and upright vertical displays in a seamless collaborative space. Both design ideas use the tabletop display as an interaction medium while the vertical display is used as a presentation medium, and are based inside the context of a photo manipulation workspace, where images can be moved around and modified.

Teleporter-Pad provides a surrogate widget of the large display on the tabletop where images placed on the teleporter-pad are placed in predefined regions of the upright display. The widget is therefore a miniature surrogate for the upright display: manipulating the widget changes content on the large display.

Lazy Susan envisions a combined digital workspace where content can literally be dragged between the displays. The Lazy Susan provides a turntable that is shared between the displays -- placing content on the turntable and turning it moves it to the large upright display.
